Which IPAF category is this MEWP?

Choose the type of machine you're using and we'll show you the relevant MEWP category.

This tool helps identify MEWP categories for reference. Training and operator requirements should be confirmed with IPAF or an approved training provider.

Likely category

Your machine is likely IPAF 1a

Static Vertical

Moves straight up and down only, and must be stationary on its stabilisers or outriggers before it's raised. It cannot be driven once the platform is elevated.

Typical examples

Trailer-mounted vertical lifts, Some vehicle-mounted vertical lifts

Also called

mast lift, personnel lift

What are IPAF categories?

IPAF, the International Powered Access Federation, runs the PAL Card training scheme most of the powered access industry uses. Its categories classify what an operator has been trained and assessed to run, based on how a machine moves -- vertical or boom, static or mobile -- not its brand, size or the informal name it goes by on site. See our full guide to IPAF categories for more detail.

What is the difference between IPAF 3a and 3b?

Both are mobile categories, meaning the machine is rated to be driven from the platform controls, including at height, within the manufacturer's limits. 3a covers vertical-only machines -- scissor lifts. 3b covers machines with a boom or jib that reaches out beyond vertical -- boom lifts and cherry pickers.

What IPAF category is a scissor lift?

Self-propelled scissor lifts are almost always category 3a (Mobile Vertical). A small number of static, non-drivable scissor-style lifts exist, so always confirm the specific model's rating rather than assuming from the machine type alone.

What IPAF category is a cherry picker?

"Cherry picker" is a colloquial term covering both 1b (static boom, e.g. most truck- and van-mounted platforms) and 3b (mobile boom, e.g. most self-propelled articulating and telescopic booms). The category depends on whether the base is stabilised and stationary while raised, or rated to drive while elevated.

What IPAF category is a spider lift?

Tracked spider lifts are generally category 1b (Static Boom): the tracks position the machine and the outriggers stabilise it, but it must be lowered before it's repositioned. Check the specific model's operating manual to confirm.
