What is a MEWP?
A practical explanation of mobile elevating work platforms, their main categories and the specifications used to select them.
The technical term
MEWP means Mobile Elevating Work Platform: equipment designed to move people, tools and materials to an elevated work position. The term covers machines often called access platforms, boom lifts, scissor lifts, man lifts or cherry pickers.
Main categories
Scissor lifts move primarily vertically. Articulating and telescopic booms add horizontal outreach. Vertical masts prioritise compact dimensions, while spider lifts combine tracks and stabilisers for restricted access.
What determines suitability
Working height is only the start. Selection must account for outreach at the required basket load, access width and height, machine weight, ground conditions, indoor or outdoor rating and the manufacturer’s operating envelope.
